DETECTIVELAND by Robin Johnson Walkthrough Firstly, a note on the map: New Losago has a simple grid system with five east-west streets alphabetised from north to south (Kentucky to Ohio), and six north-south avenues numbered from west to east, then Princeley Boulevard running north-south down the east side of the city. You can get about by walking, or call a taxi (if you have some money) from the phone booths that are scattered around. First things first: - Open the filing cabinet and get everything that comes out. Fire the revolver (to discover that it's actually a cigarette lighter.) - Take the book from the bookcase. Get the photo and look at it. Refold the Murphy bed. You initially have three cases available to you. These can be done in any order, and more than one can be open at once. Open a case by talking to one of the clients waiting in the office building, just outside your office. You can have more than one case open at once (but you can't open them all straight away, because you can't have more than one client in your office at once. If you leave a client in your office once their case is open, they'll go home after a few turns.) SPEAKEASY STREET (the rat-faced man) - Leave your office and talk to the rat-faced man in the hallway. Ask him about all the topics. Read the flyer he gives you. - Leave and go to the funeral parlour (you can get a cab by calling it from the payphone, or walk - it's one block north.) - Try getting past the receptionist - you can't. Go back out and talk to the two guys. - When they carry one of the coffins in, open a coffin. Remove the booze. You need to leave it where they won't find it - one block south will do. Drop it there, then go back and get in a coffin. They will carry it in. Once you're inside, talk to Vivenne. Get the car keys (either Vivienne will give them to you, or you can get them out of her desk in the office when she's out of the room.) - Go back outside. Hold the car keys, and you'll be able to enter the hearse. Open the glove compartment. Take the receipt and read it. - Go to the lumberyard at Ohio and 1st. Talk to the manager and the workers. (For more honest answers, talk to the workers when the manager isn't around.) Get the oilcan. Try to get the account book. - There are two ways to get the account book. One is to bring the booze to the lumberyard and put it down inside. The workers will down tools and start drinking. The other is to call Cawmill's bluff and go and get a warrant from the police station - for which you'll need to bribe Officer Garroway (hold the money while talking to him to get this option) - then get in Garroway's car and, after he drives to the lumberyard, lead him to Mr Cawmill. - Read the account book to find the address of the house in Princeley Heights. You could also have got this from the trumpet player in the speakeasy. - Go to that address. Climb the gate to get in. Go into the stable and get the tarpaulin and the bale of hay. Enter the house. Take the soft houseshoes and wear them. Look at the photos on the wall. - You have to get through the house without making any noise. If you fail, you'll end up in the hospital, and you can go back and try again. Start by going upstairs. Oil the dresser to stop it creaking, then open it. Take the pillow and sheet. - You can now explore the rest of the ground floor. In the front room, you need to throw the sheet (or the tarpaulin) over the birdcage before the bird squawks, then drop the pillow (or the bale of hay) to catch the china set when it falls. In the back room, you need to drop the hay bale (or pillow - whichever you didn't use for the front room) to catch the sculpture. - Once you're out the back, go through the hole in the hedge, then along the trail to Swampy Hollow. Talk to the old hillbilly. When he gives you a drink, drink it. When he mentions his granddaughter, ask about her. - You'll need to sneak back through the house with the soft shoes on, and remove them before climbing over the front gate. Then go to the law firm at Maine and 5th. Talk to the lawyer and the secretary. Try telling the lawyer about her past. Look in the inbox and find the demolition order. Show it to Mary Jo Lou Belle. She'll walk out of the job. - Go outside and talk to Mary Jo Lou Belle in the street. You now have a choice - you can either suggest she go home and carry on making booze, or not. - Wexler will have left a note in your office with the address for his apartment. Go there and get the other half of your money, if he thinks you deserve it. A STUDY IN SQUID (the pale young man) - Leave your office and talk to the pale young man. Ask about all his conversation topics. Get the first half of your money. - Leave the office building and go one block south, then one block west, to Nebraska Streeet and 2nd Avenue. Enter the dilapidated house. - Go north to the end of the hallway, and get the crowbar. The lamp is optional - you do need a light source for this case, but you can use the flashlight from your office instead. - Go south to the hall, then west to the study. Take the letter to Distain and read it. Type on the typewriter, then pick up the typewriter paper. Try to read it. - Pick up the statuette of a raven to open the trap door in the hall. - Go back east to the hall, descend the ladder, and turn on your light (either the oil lamp or the flashlight.) - Go through the cellar door. - Hold the crowbar and remove the planks from the wall. (You can also use the handsaw from the lumberyard, if you happen to have been there on another case.) Go through the hole. - If you go east, then east again, you will get into the sewers. You won't be able to find your way through yet, but you can always go UP to get out (this will put you at a random point in the city.) - Follow the tunnel northwest, then north. (You can ride the minecart, but the idea is that to work out where the tunnel goes, you need to walk it. You could also talk to Marcus about the tunnel, once you've found it, to get a clue.) - The tunnel goes to the city dockyard, which you can enter from Louisiana Street and 1st Avenue. Go there. Hold the crowbar and open the manhole. - Enter the fishing boat. Talk to the sailor. Ask her about the boat, and her partner, and the ink, and the tunnels. She'll give you a map of the sewers. - Go back to the sewer (you can get there quickly through the tunnel from the dockyard.) When you're in the sewer, read the map. It will always take you to the other 'end' of the sewer system. - Use the crowbar or handsaw to remove the planks at this end. Go through the hole. - Look at the aquarium. - Talk to the guy in the overcoat. Ask him about himself, and this room, and the squid, and their ink. - When the ultraviolet lamp is on, try reading the typewriter paper again. - Go back through the hole, and read the map again to get to the "house" end of the sewer system. - Go back to the fishing boat. Tell the sailor about the letter. (This is optional, but clues you to some information that you need to get the 'best' ending.) - Go back to the study in the Distain house, where Marcus is now. Tell him about the smuggling and the tunnels. Collect your reward. Optional, but necessary to get the 'best' ending: - The treasure that was hidden in the house was the doorknob, which you can get $2,000 for if you take it to the pawn shop at Maine and 2nd. - When you have over $2000 (which can only be done by either pawning the doorknob or finding A LOT of change on the sidewalk), you can go to the hospital where Ruby works (at Ohio and 3rd) and pop the question. (If you previously asked her about your relationship, she'll have mentioned that you'd need at least a couple thousand in savings.) THE BIG PICKLE (the flustered dame) - Leave your office and talk to the flustered dame in the hallway. Ask her about all the topics. When she gives you the notepaper, read it. - Leave the building (out, twice) then call a cab from the phone box. Talk to the cabbie and ask to go to the Macdonald house. (Taxi destinations are added as you explore or gain information.) - Enter the house. Go to the kitchen and look in the refrigerator and cupboards. Get the belljar and turpentine. Open the belljar and taste the sandwich. - Go upstairs and explore both bedrooms. - Now find Mrs Macdonald (she's wandering around the house) and ask her about science and the sandwich, then the hate mail. - Go outside. Find a cab and go to Corndale College. Enter. - There are two ways to get past the students. One is to dress up like a professor, which involves wearing the professor's jacket and smoking the pipe (you'll need to put the tobacco in it and light it with the lighter.) The other is to climb the flagpole, for which you'll need either to apply turpentine to remove the slippery paint, or wear the driving gloves from the hearse in "Speakeasy Street". - Go to the south end of campus and enter the science building. Look at the staff photographs to find Professor Maconald's laboratory. Open his mailbox (Mrs Macdonald should have given you the key). Read the hate mail. Read the crumpled menu, and pick up the iron key which falls out. - Go to the Italian restaurant at Maine Street and 4th Avenue. - Try to open the utility closet. To get rid of the chef, you'll need to order a pizza. Ask for the three spicy toppings - spicy salami, chilies, and hot sauce. When the chef goes into the kitchen, hold the iron key and open the utility closet. Untie the professor, then pick up the spaghetti and 'tie' it to some chairs) to make a tripwire. When the chef returns, he'll trip and end up swallowing the pizza, so if it's triple-spicy, he'll be incapacitated and you've won the case. - Go back and talk to Mrs Macdonald to get your money, or the rest of it. A TWISTY LITTLE MURDER Whichever of those three cases you did last, you won't have been able to get your money at the end, because your client has been murdered. - Search the corpse. (If you don't search the corpse, but instead go and report the murder to the police, you'll get a 'bad' ending.) - You've been kidnapped by the senator and taken to the docks. Talk to him until he's told you about his plan. - There are three ways to get out of this: - If you go straight on to the fishing boat, you can ask the sailor for help. (Ending 1) - To go anywhere else, you need to get a headstart on the Cardiccis by going through the tunnel and riding the minecart. - If you go to the police station, you can ask Officer Garroway for help. You'll need to bribe him (hold the money while talking to him to get this option.) (Ending 2) - If you go to the hospital AND you have already proposed to Ruby, you can ask her for help. (Ending 3, or another 'bad' ending if you haven't proposed yet.)
