How do I start? Well, the Inquisitor is waiting. Get moving, there's not too many places you can go. W, SW, N, ENTER And once Pieter is following you, return to your office Where's Nina? Explore a bit, you're bound to find the cafeteria. Go south from the Hall of the Mural and then southwest. How do I get the cell number? Nina said it was on file. Where are files kept? No, your office is the Office of Documentation, not the Office of Filing The Office of Filing is northwest of the Hall of the Mural Oh, they're not letting you in. Who are they letting in? What do all the people entering and leaving the Office have in common? You're going to need a red armband. How can I get a red armband? There are two ways of getting a red armband. One involves dying an armband of another color. The other method involves making an armband out of red cloth. How can I find dye? Did you notice how the red armbands were described? Have you watched what Pieter is doing in the office? You need your old inkpad. Ok, so Pieter is being selfish. If you could lure him out of the room somehow... How can I distract Pieter? You only need to get him as far as the vestibule. Have you noticed anything interesting about the objects in the vestibule? What about the space behind the bench? If something that made a lot of noise was put in that space I bet it would attract some attention. Have you looked at your clock? Have you tried setting your clock? Set your clock, put it in the space, and then grab the inkpad. How can I dye the armband? Once you have the ink, you'll need an armband. You can't use the one you're wearing, but you have a spare in your trunk in the dormitory You're going to need some privacy to dye it though. Those pesky cameras... Where would you go for privacy normally? Yup, the camera in the bathroom is broken. You can dye the spare armband there. Oh, and you'll want to take off your orange armband and put on the red on there too. How can I make a red armband? If you don't want to find dye, you can make an armband, if you locate some red cloth. There's not much cloth lying around a place like the Citadel, but there's one exception... Look at the beds in the dormitory. Notice anything red? You can cut a strip of red cloth from your pillow if you have something to cut it with. You can't cut it in here though, not with the cameras. You'll need some privacy. Where would you go for privacy normally? Yup, the camera in the bathroom is broken. You can cut the pillow. Oh, and you'll want to take off your orange armband and put on the red on there too. And don't forget to return your pillow to your bed. Where can I get a working pair of scissors? Have you looked at the form left in your office when you return from seeing the Inquisitor? Bring that form to the Office of Requisitions (east from the Hall of the Mural) and give it to Masha Hmm, these scissors don't apprear to be sharp enough to do anything. If you have a smooth stone you could probably sharpen them. There are several smooth stones you can use in the courtyard. What's the deal with the boy in the courtyard? The boy obviously wants to leave the Citadel, and he'll follow you around if you talk to him. Unfortunately, even with boy in tow, the guard won't let you out without a leave pass. And you're not going to get a leave pass in this game. However, members of the Department of Enforcing can come and go as they please. What distinguishes members of the Department of Enforcing (such as this guard)? You're going to need to find a green armband. There's a green armband in the trunk you share in the dormitory. You'll have to put it on where there are no cameras to watch you though. Where would you go for privacy normally? Yup, the camera in the bathroom is broken. You can put on the green armband there. Once you're wearing the green armband you can talk to the boy and take him outside. What do I do once I know the cell number? Leave the Office of Filing and Nina will stop you in the hall. Meet her in the cafeteria like she asks. You can use the code she gives you in the elevator in the Hall of the Mural to go to the tenth floor. How do I work the elevator? Once you know the code for a given floor you just need to push the buttons in sequence. You can always return to the main floor by pressing the black "L" button. How do I enter the control room? The door is locked. Who might have a key? Examine the sleeping guard. You can take the key from his console, unlock the door, and enter the control room. How do the cell opening controls work? The big screen shows the cell door the controls are currently trained on. You want the green numbers to be the cell number you found on file. Typing numbers on the keypad changes the first number. Turning the dial changes the letter, with 1equaling A, 2 equaling B and so on. The switch toggles the last number from 1 to 2. TYPE 41 ON KEYPAD, TURN DIAL TO 2 The rectangular button opens the door. Once you've got the right door, press this button. Oh, she didn't give you an access code, did she? Have you been outside yet? If not you need to go back to the main floor and get past the guard at the main entrance. If you've been outside then you have the neccessary code, from an unlikely source. Examine the match book and type the number written there onto the keypad. When Nina starts screaming, what am I supposed to do? Get out of the control room first of all! Well, then you have a choice don't you? You have the code to get down to the cell where she is. You could go help her. Or you could just return to the main floor and go about your life, your job done. It's up to you. How can I avoid being killed by the guards? Always keep moving away from them. And don't dawdle! They move quickly. How can I escape from the cell I'm put in? Listen to the voice from the vent. Have you looked under the bed? The spike will help you, but not in the way the voice suggests. The guards only come through every few days, so killing the guard isn't going to work. The vent is big enough to crawl through though. And you can unscrew the bolts with the spike... But it's electrified. You need to insulate the spike. What do you have that would stop the flow of electricity? The boy's rubber ball. Now you just have to get it around the spike. Rubber melts fairly easily. No, one match isn't going to do it, you need some kind of sustained fire. If you look at the dish it seems someone has burned things in there before. If you had some fuel to burn in the dish you could do it. Alcohol burns. Pour the alcohol from Abber's flask into the dish, strike a match, and light it. You can then put the ball in the flame and then put it on the spike. Then you can open the vent with the coated spike and crawl out. More guards! What do I do? Keep moving through the vents away from your cell. Time is of the essence. Hmm, big fan blocking the way. If you could jam it with something you could probaby slip through. PUT SPIKE IN FAN Ok, I'm in a side street, what now? Well, the guards are on your trail, you should get hidden quickly. When you see the old woman beckon you, enter her house. What do I do in the hatmaker's shop? The lady wants to give you something, you might as well hang around till she finds it. Look around and talk to the lady as she searches. Depending on what you've just looked at you'll have different things to say to the lady. Eventually she'll find what she's looking for, and some interesting events will occur. Just make sure that you escape quickly to the northeast when the guards show up. I'm in a series of alleys, being chased. Help! Just keep moving! Be clever! You can try to slow the guards down by dumping a coal bin. You can lower the fire escape in one alley and try to climb that. You can climb the pile of garbage next to the fence. Beyond the fence you can push the crate against the fence, or hide in it. You can try to climb the walls. The guards will catch you eventually, but it's important you try to avoid them. I can't talk, but unless I do the Inquisitor will kill me! You have to communicate with him some other way. You can still show him objects. What do you have that might interest him at this point? SHOW CHIP TO INQUISITOR Another cell? Can I escape? Yes, but not through the vent. Wait until your food arrives. Look at the food and read the note hidden inside. The door will open soon after. I'm in the halls, where can I go? In one part of the hall where there aught to be a cell there's a small alcove. Notice how the floor of the alcove behaves when you turn the crank. Inside the alcove, pull the lever. How do I get out of the furnace room? The only way out is down. You can unscrew the bolts on the drain with your bare hands. Just be quick about it, the guards are coming! I'm in the sewers, where do I go? First of all, make sure you keep away from the guards! You're deep underground and you want to get back up. Water always flows downhill. Pay attention in each room to where the water is coming from. Always head upstream, in the direction your hear the water coming from. How can I escape the stadium? You can't. This is the end of the road. There are several actions you can take here that successfully end the game. Each of them is viable, and some better than others. If you want to live though, you'll have to play the Inquisitor's game. It's a fifty-fifty chance. Try opening the box with the scales.
