The story so far...
Thaxted Havershill, adventurer, treasure hunter, rapscallion, man's man and lady's man is searching for the Golden Wombat...
For months he has tracked its location through libraries and museums, consulting manuscripts and people of dubious character in his search...
Finally, he has found it...
It lies hidden in the ancient castle of Baron Krunge, deep in the Carpathian mountains. It has always been reckoned to be impregnable but Thaxted has managed to get inside...
Unfortunately, he has achieved this end by being captured by the Baron's men...
Our hero finds himself in a locked room within Castle Krunge...
[[Now, read on...|Locked Room]]

Thaxted Havershill sits upon a miserable bed. He has a black eye, a bloody nose and several bruised ribs.
Despite his injuries, he smiles at the thought that he had acquitted himself well, leaving three of the Baron's men lying on the ground in various states of potential hospitalisation.
But, five men were just too many...
He gets up and takes a closer look at his room...
There is a tall, thin [[window|WindowDesc]], no more than a foot wide. The wind blows wickedly in from the freezing night.
A single, wall mounted [[gas lamp|LampDesc]] gutters above a grimy looking [[bed|BedDesc]].
The [[door|DoorDesc]] is closed.
[[What to do?|What To Do]]
The window looks out across a wild, rocky vista. Even if Thaxted could climb through he would plunge hundreds of feet to his doom.
(Hmmm? There's a jolly thought!)

The lamp is very loosely fixed to the wall. A strong smell of gas emanates from it. There's a leak somewhere although the flame burns enough to light the room.

[[Back|Locked Room]]
The mattress is damp and has a grubby sheet rolled up as an improvised pillow. There are bloodstains from Thaxted's nose.
(Not exactly the Ritz, Thaxted, old chap...)

[[Back|Locked Room]]
The door is very heavy, very wooden and very much not about to open.
There is a solid door handle.
Thaxted (If:$doorflag)[[[tries to open the door...|HearGuards]]](Else:)[slaps the door in frustration...] (If:not $doorflag)[ All that happens is that the guards start grumbling...]
There is no keyhole or locking method. It must be secured on the outside, he thinks.
[[Back|Locked Room]]
Someone on the other side of the door bangs his foot against the it. A rough voice from outside the room shouts, "Shut up!"
"Settle down, Havershill," says a second voice, laughing cruelly. "You won't have long to wait for the Baron..."
Thaxted is quietly pleased that they feel he is such a threat that two men are needed to guard him.

Thaxted contemplates his choices...
"Hmmm?", he muses. "What can I use to make my escape?"
Perchance the [[bed sheet|Bed Sheet]]? Possibly the [[lamp|Lamp]]? Mayhap the [[bed|Bed]]?
"It's a quandry, and no mistake..."
Thaxted grabs the sheet from the bed and holds it to the gas lamp. In a few moments the sheet begins to burn and smoke starts to fill the room.
Pushing the burning sheet against the door, smoke filters out into the hall. The guards start to cough and splutter.
"What are you doing, Havershill?" asks one.
"Idiot's trying to kill himself," says the other.
Thaxted stands over by the window breathing in the freezing air.
"Get him out of there! The Baron wants him alive!"
From outside Thaxted hears the guards lift a heavy wooden bar. Coughing, a guard comes into the room.
[[Thaxted rushes towards the guard...|Attack the Guards]]
Thaxted grabs hold of the lamp and pulls the pipe from the wall.
Gas immediately strikes him full in the face.
Thaxted coughs violently and falls to the floor.
"Help me," he shouts.
"Go to sleep, Havershill," replies the guard.
Thaxted falls to the floor, gasping weakly. "Help me... Please..."
In a few moments he has passed into unconsciousness and shortly after breathes his last...
[[Not such a clever move...|Restart Game]]
Thaxted tries to lift the bed but it has been bolted to the floor. Why? he muses. Is it likely to run away?
Alarmingly, the mattress seems to be moving... There are obviously some substantially sized (if: $bugflag)[[[bed bugs|Bed Bugs]]](if: not $bugflag)[bed bugs] in Castle Krunge. (if:not $bugflag)[Thaxted can see wriggling bodies inside the mattress through the little hole he poked.]
[[BACK|What To Do]]
Moving like a steam train, Thaxted barrels into the guard, knocking him to the ground.
"Take that, you swine," he says, kicking him in the head. The guard groans satisfyingly and passes out.
Thaxted leaps into the hall and faces up to the other guard.
"What's it to be?" says Thaxted, full of vim and vigour. "A broken nose, a concussion or should I just break your scrawny neck?"
"You didn't mention option four," replies the guard, drawing a six inch knife from a sheath at his waist. "The option where I risk the Baron's anger and slit your throat." The guard takes up a stance, balanced on the balls of his feet.
It's a rum looking do for Thaxted...
He considers his options...
[[Sweep his legs|Sweep His Legs]], [[kick the knife from his hand|Kick The Knife]] or [[give him a jolly good beating...|Jolly Good Beating]]
Unable to resist the temptation, Thaxted pokes the mattress. The fragile material splits and a multicoloured head pops out.
The bug's head is as big as Thaxted's thumb nail and he is reknowned for his large thumbs!!!
Fortunately, the bug's body is too big to squeeze through the hole in the mattress... For the time being...

Involuntarilly shuddering, [[Thaxted thinks again...|What To Do]]
The guard is obviously familiar with the martial arts. Nevertheless, a leg sweep can often be successful.
As fast as a striking cobra, Thaxted sweeps the guard's legs from under him, knocking him to the ground. The guard smacks his head on the floor and grunts into uncosciousness.
Grinning, Thaxted reaches out for the guard's knife.
But, the guard has been faking it and in a flurry of movement slices across Thaxted's throat.
Thaxted looks down with unbelieving eyes. How could he have been so stupid...
[[End of the line, Thaxted, old chap|Restart Game]]
Thaxted kicks out at the guard with astonishing speed.
The guard blocks the kick and knocks Thaxted's leg to the side, unbalancing him.
Thaxted regains his balance just in time to defend himself against the guard's expert knife strike. As if to underline his expertise and his confidence, the guard moves out of range and spins the knife between his hands. The long blade catches the gas light in the corridor.
Thaxted takes up his own stance and prepares to renew his attack.
Suddenly, a heavy lump of wood makes contact with his head. Thaxted turns round in time to see the first guard holding the bar which locked the door.
As he passes out, Thaxted thinks, I should have given him a harder kick...
[[It's a failure, I'm afraid, Thaxted, old bean...|Restart Game]]
The guard is heavily muscled with the low brow of a borderline neanderthal. Despite his appearance, he moves into a fighting stance with ease holding his knife securely in his right hand.
He looks about the same height and weight as myself, thinks Thaxted. And possibly, as well practised in the fighting arts. Hmmm...
Without another thought, Thaxted runs headlong at the guard, grabbing him around the waist and lifting him off his feet. With a thud he lands on top of the guard and is relieved to see the knife clatter to the ground.
"Weren't expecting this, were you?" shouts Thaxted as he repeatedly punches the guard's face. "No subtlety, no style, just a jolly good beating."
With a final mighty punch, he knocks the guard out.
Breathing heavily, Thaxted drags the guard into his erstwhile prison and bars the door, locking both guards inside. Picking up the dropped knife, he walks down the corridor towards a [[staircase leading down into the castle...| Pre Into The Castle]]
(reload:)
Creeping down the stairs, Thaxted notes how old the [[castle|CastleHistory]] is. Hundreds of years of feet pounding the stairs have worn the steps away, the polished stone making it a much more difficult descent than normal.
After a few moments, Thaxted sees another guard sitting in front of a roaring fire. Thaxted's sharp eyes reveal that the guard's eyelids are drooping. He seems very dopey but it seems unlikely that even the almost supernaturally light footed Thaxted Havershill would be able to [[sneak by him...|Sneak By Guard]]
Thaxted fingers the knife... [[A well thrown knife|Throw Knife]] would kill the guard before he knew it (although it could miss and clatter to the ground) or perhaps he should resist the temptation to get rid of another guard and [[question him...|Question Guard]]
Thaxted takes a deep breath and prepares to sneak by the guard.
During his studies at the ninja schools of the orient, Thaxted had learned to be as silent as a cloud and as light footed as a cat filled with helium. Unfortunately, he had not learned to be invisible...

A log sparks loudly in the fireplace and falls crackling onto the floor, waking the guard. Thaxted leaps the few feet between himself and the guard but alas, too late to stop him from yelling for help.

Resigned to his fate, Thaxted raises his hands...

Thaxted walks silently towards the sleepy guard. With a blur of movement, he holds the knife to the guard's throat who, unsurprisingly, is rather surprised.
"Now listen here, chummy. I'm giving you a choice. I could slit your throat and leave your body sitting here roasting in front of the fire. All very well and good for any passing cannibals but not too splendid for you, eh?"
The guard gulps and nods his head slowly.
"Or," continues Thaxted, speaking directly into the guard's ear. "You could let me have a bit of info about the layout of this venerable old pile and I'll just knock you out... Howsabout that?"
The guard gulps again. "What would you like to know?"
"Now, there's a sensible fellow..." says Thaxted, keeping the razor sharp knife at the guard's throat. "Firstly, how many of you delightful chaps are guarding the Baron? Not counting the two sleeping beauties upstairs of course..."
"There are six guards... next floor down..."
"Armed?"
"Yes. And there's Zoltan..."
"And who, pray, is 'Zoltan'?" Chuckles Thaxted. "He sounds like a circus strongman."
"He's much more than that," says the guard. "He comes from a nearby village in the mountains. He's huge... Seven feet tall and solid muscle... He carried you up to the turret room under one arm. Didn't even breathe heavily..."
This information brought Thaxted no cause to chuckle.
"And the tiny wombat? Where can I find that?"
"I don't know." Thaxted presses the knife a little harder against the guard's throat.
"Please believe me," begs the guard. "I don't know. I don't know. One more thing I can tell you... Take the furthest right corridor at the bottom of the staircase... That'll take you to the Baron's rooms... Maybe it's there... Please don't kill me... I've told you everything I know..."
Thaxted removes the knife from the guard's throat and applies a strangle hold until the man relaxes and slides to the ground. Tearing off a length of material from the guard's shirt he stuffs it in his mouth then, using his belt, he secures the guard to the chair and lays them both on the ground.

Castle Krunge was built in the early part of the 9th century by the Fertingals, who for many generations had been poor carrot growers. Their sudden change of fortune occurred after a freak accident involving a falling elephant and a villager.
Pargetty Fertingal, the matriarch of the family, pointed out that no elephant had fallen on or near a carrot and so, eating a carrot became a talisman against being crushed by an elephant.
In fact, as Pergetty was at pains to point out, even her own family elephant had been driven away by carrots.
In defence of the Pergetty Fertingal, not one villager was killed by a falling elephant from that day forward.
The price of carrots rocketed overnight and the Fertingal's fortune was made.
For three hundred years the Fertingal's ruled this part of Carpathia until the Orange riots of 1184 when groups of orange skinned villagers stormed the castle.
Nature and Romania deplore a vaccuum so, Gorrodan Splavek, a retired pastry chef, who, unfeasibly, managed to raise a small army and take the castle from the orange skinned denizens.
There followed five hundred years of peace and tranquility during which the villagers thrived on a range of pies, tarts and pasties.
The Krunge family arrived in the late seventeenth cntury from the frozen steppes far to the North. Hard men living hard lives, they had no time for pastries, sweet or savoury and so the era of the Splavek family came to an abrupt and horrid end.
Having inherited the family traits of viciousness, callousness and a truly extraordinary level of physical repulsiveness, Baron Zanzar Krunge is the current ruler of Castle Krunge.

Thaxted looks around the room and sees no fewer than thirty machine guns pointing directly at him. The Baron is sitting on a large, throne like chair holding what appears to be a box covered in buttons one of which he presses.
The door slams shut.
"The guns are automatically trained on you. All I have to do is press this button and you will, admittedly for a very short time, have the unique experience of thousands of bullets ripping into and through your body." The Baron's smile does not comfort Thaxted.
Sitting on a table next to the Baron is the object of Thaxted's quest... The Golden Wombat is four inches high and cast from solid gold. Its eyes are emeralds which twinkle in the gas light.
"And all for this... This trinket..." The Baron picks up the Wombat and turns it over in his hand.

"Not so much of a trinket since you killed my sister and her family to steal it..."
"That was your sister? She didn't put up much of a fight." The Baron smirks cruelly. Thaxted makes to jump forward and wring the Baron's scrawny neck. The guns click and whirr to find their target again.
"Now, now, Thaxted. Settle down..."
Thaxted clenched his fists and stood fuming.
"Mister Havershill," says the Baron, pensively. "I'm a fellow who enjoys a game and a puzzle... Why don't we play a little game, eh?"

"So... My sister and her family?"
"Never existed."
"But I hate you for stealing the Wombat and killing them..."
"Yes, it's a strange feeling isn't it? But, consider this. I have thirty machine guns following your every move ready to fill you full of lead at a single button press. How are they doing that? The castle is full of gas lighting... Suddenly, I've developed an A.I. tracking system..."

Sweating, Thaxted looks down at the serpent's body twitching with its final convulsion...
Venom drips from the creatures fangs onto the floor of the corridor...(if: not $HoldingKnife)[Picking up the knife,] Thaxted bends down and dips the blade (if: $HoldingKnife)[of his knife] into the fluid...

Hello!!!
I'm the writer of this little piece of interactive fiction...
I hope you're having a lovely day... And I hope you enjoy reading/playing the story in a few seconds...
[[Here is a walk through|WalkThrough]] for you... (Should you want such a thing...) Take note of the info because this is the only place you can see it...
There are a few occasions during this tale where I opted to use a bit of random determination... Not unlike real life...
However, if you do not want to finish the story as a result of a computer determined random outcome feel free to disable that particular option [[here...|Disable Random]]
Otherwise, if you fancy your chances... [[please carry on...|The Beginning Of The Tale]]
(set: $RandomOption to false)
(go-to: "The Beginning Of The Tale")
Thaxted watches the serpent's eyes carefully in an attempt to guess its next move...
The creature moves like a cobra hypnotising its prey... Thaxted shakes his head to clear the strange influence...
Purely by chance, Thaxted slips on the wet floor and falls just as the serpent lunges... Rolling away, he watches as the serpent slides back into the dirty water...
Thaxted edges towards the pool again and the serpent rises up once more, hissing with fury... Throwning himself towards the creature, Thaxted grabs its neck and begins to squeeze...
The serpent thrashes around wrapping its sinuous length around Thaxted's legs...
The sound of bones crunching beneath his fingers signals the death of the serpent and Thaxted throws the dead body to the floor...

Thaxted looks up at the enormous fellow and swallows hard.
"You're no bigger than some of the chaps in the rugger teams back home... Actually," Thaxted smirks. "You're only a bit bigger than some of the women's rugby squad!"
Zoltan makes a low rumbling sound which may well have been a laugh. It may have been wind...
He moves very quickly for a man with a chest the size of a wardrobe. Thaxted found himself reeling from Zoltan's fist.
"Ha ha ha," laughs Thaxted, shaking his head. "Call that a punch? I've punched myself harder..." Despite his bravado, Thaxted takes up a fighting stance and blocks the gargantuan man's next attack.
With absolutely no shame, Thaxted kicks Zoltan very hard in the nether regions of his trousers and is rewarded by seeing Zoltan fall groaning to his knees and with even less shame, clutch his bruised danglies.
Thaxted aims a boot to Zoltan's head and the big man falls unconscious to the floor.
[[There is a wooden door leading deeper into the castle...|Barons Room]]

Creeping down the stairs, Thaxted notes how old the [[castle|CastleHistory]] is. Hundreds of years of feet pounding the stairs have worn the steps away, the polished stone making it a much more difficult descent than normal.
After a few moments, Thaxted sees another guard sitting in front of a roaring fire. Thaxted's sharp eyes reveal that the guard's eyelids are drooping. He seems very dopey but it seems unlikely that even the almost supernaturally light footed Thaxted Havershill would be able to [[sneak by him...|Sneak By Guard NOT RANDOM]]
Thaxted fingers the knife... [[A well thrown knife|Throw Knife NOT RANDOM]] would kill the guard before he knew it (although it could miss and clatter to the ground) or perhaps he should resist the temptation to get rid of another guard and [[question him...|Question Guard]]
Thaxted takes a deep breath and prepares to sneak by the guard.
During his studies at the ninja schools of the orient, Thaxted had learned to be as silent as a cloud and as light footed as a cat filled with helium. Unfortunately, he had not learned to be invisible...
Good fortune favour him and Thaxted sneaks by the guard and heads on [[into the castle...|Corridor Room]]
The Knife spins through the air and clatters harmlessly against the guards chest.
He splutters awake and sees Thaxted.
"He's escaped!!! Havershill's escaped!!!" He yells at the top of his voice.
With a voice like that he should be a bally opera singer, thinks Thaxted as half a dozen fully armed guards appear from a corridor.
[[Oh dear, Thaxted... The end is very nigh...|Restart Game]]
After moving from one [[virtual|Life Of Thaxted]] location to another, the Baron continues...
"If the reader has a look through this text they will notice a number of words highlighted... Only one will allow you to escape with your life and the Golden [[Wombat.|Death Of Thaxted]] If they get it wrong, it's a hail of bullet style [[death|Death Of Thaxted]] for you..."
Thaxted looks out at you. "Please pick carefully... And please be [[forgiving|Death Of Thaxted]] of the writer who thought this would be amusing enough to entertain you..."
The Baron looks at Thaxted and looks at you. He presses a button and the weapons turn to focus on him.
"Well done," he says sadly, tossing the Wombat to Thaxted. "My car is parked outside. It's not far to the nearest town. Farewell, Thaxted Havershill." With that, the Baron stands up in front of the guns and presses the button.
Thaxted watches dumfounded as the Baron is torn to pieces by the hails of bullets. Blood, bone, guts and sinews are strewn far and wide in the thunderous attack.
When it all finishes, Thaxted turns away from the disintegrated Baron and walks out of a door towards the Baron's car.
Although none of it has been real, Thaxted feels that he has avenged his fictitious family.
"Hmmm," he muses. "It IS a strange feeling."
"Oh dear," says the Baron. "Time to die, Thaxted, old chap."
The Baron presses a button and Thaxted feels the first hundred bullets pass through his body.
After that... Nothing.
The Baron looks out at you. "Poor choice there...I know it was all a bit random but, the writer realised that he had less that a day to get the entry to the IF Comp finished so, bless him, he tried this... I don't know if I would have done it this way myself but..." The Baron shrugs his shoulders.
"Anyway. I ve enjoyed existing for this short period of time, albeit only in your mind."
The Baron picks up a broom and starts to push the squelchy remnants of Thaxted to the side of the room.
"Must get on," says the Baron.
In the first room you should look at everything... Then select "What to do..."
Once you've done that the way out is to use the sheet...
Once outside, give the guard a "jolly good beating"...
When you encounter the sleeping guard, question him...
The most informative/helpful choice of corridors is LEFT then MIDDLE... You will be chased by the guards after going LEFT... But you can make it back into the corridor room... Do not backtrack from the corridor room or you will be caught...
At the very end, the word to chose is "VIRTUAL"
Blimey!!! It's taken me a couple of weeks to write this and these are the only decisions you have to make... Hmmm... Is it me or are all TWINE games like this? ;-)
