The human race is developing technologies at a rate you can't even fathom. The only constant in this ever-changing madness is the place where you now find yourself: the bus station. If it wasn't for the tiny screens every prospective passenger is staring at, this could be 1994, 1983, or even 1971.
You're sitting on one of the few seats by your departure door, surrounded by people and their mountains of luggage. A few eager travellers have started to form a little queue by the door, even though you doubt it will open for another twenty minutes.
[[Join the queue]]
[[Stay seated]]You stand and haul your backpack onto your shoulders. Immediately, someone swoops in and takes your seat. You move to the back of the queue and put your backpack on the ground in front of you. This might take a while.
Most people are quiet, their eyes fixed on their phones or the glass door. Through the large windows you can see buses coming and going while tired-looking drivers stand around in high-visibility vests, smoking or chatting. They're clearly not in a hurry. You silently chide yourself for leaving your precious seat.
After what feels like half an hour, a driver strolls over to the door. With the press of a button, the door is open and the queue surges forward.
[[Board the bus]]You take out your book, determined to look relaxed in the hope of tricking yourself into actually calming down. Why can't you just be one of those people who genuinely don't care about stuff like this? Someone who doesn't have to devote 80% of their brain power to worrying they should join the queue and the other 20% to trying to ignore the worries?
You manage to read about five pages over the course of half an hour, looking up after every paragraph to see if the queue is moving. Finally, the door opens and you hurry to shove your book in your bag and rush to the back of the now very large, very wide queue.
[[Board the bus]]You make it through the queue by the door only to end up in another one to stow your backpack in the luggage hold. A very grumpy man in a rumpled uniform shouts at a woman who had the temerity to put her suitcase in the hold without telling him where she was travelling to. He yells something in Dutch, she complains in French, and there's a thump as he throws her suitcase off the bus and onto the tarmac. Everyone in the queue winces.
Keen to avoid a similar spectacle, you obediently follow the man's instructions. With your backpack safely in the hold, you show your ticket to the driver and find your seat.
[[Sit down and get comfy]](set: $breakdown to true)A few minutes turns into half an hour. You and your fellow passengers sit on the thankfully dry grass by the layby while the driver pokes about in the engine and scratches his head. It takes him a full forty minutes to realise the radiator cap had fallen down behind some wires. Once the radiator is topped up and the engine is sufficiently cool, he lets you all back onto the bus. A couple of people cheer, but everyone else looks like they've had just about enough of this journey.
Back in your seat, you fall asleep almost instantly. That fresh air must have done you some good. (if: $hamburgBus is true)[You're woken by the bus coming to a stop once more. After a brisk stroll around the little rest stop building, you head inside to use the loo. The queue is long, but you'd rather wait here than risk the WC on the bus.
Feeling refreshed, you go outside to rejoin your fellow passengers.

[[Get back on the bus->Get back on the bus 2]]]It feels like you've been travelling through Germany for ages, so surely it can't be that long until you make it to Hamburg.
You're really looking forward to sleeping in a bed tonight.

}The bus. It's gone. It was right there and now... Nothing. A couple of smouldering cigarette butts on the ground are the only sign of recent life.
Well, that's not exactly how you expected the day to go.

[[Look out the window->Look out the window 2]]] Only a couple of chapters to go. It doesn't take you long to read them, but the conclusion of the story gives you plenty to think about.
[[Look out the window->Look out the window 2]] So this is Hamburg. You gaze at the grey, industrial landscape, wondering if you've made a mistake. Could this really be a city brimming over with wonderful art, music and food? You could have chosen to go anywhere in Europe, but this was the cheapest bus.
Your hopes start to rise as the bus moves closer to the city centre. The buildings get more interesting, more quirky. You pass a beautiful church. A lovingly landscaped garden. A busy street market. You tell yourself to be more open minded.
The bus stops right in the heart of the city. Finally.
[[Get off the bus->Get off the bus 3]]By the time the bus stops on the outskirts of Hamburg, you feel like you've known the woman in the seat next to you forever and the biscuits are long gone. While you enjoyed them together, you talked about your families, your homes, your hopes and dreams. You have so much in common with each other that it's almost spooky.
This is her stop, but you've exchanged contact info and promised to meet up during your stay. She knows a tapas place you're really going to love.
You wave to her as the bus pulls away towards its final destination.

Now where was that Airbnb again? You take out your phone and look up the address. It's funny to think that your holiday has only just begun.

[[Try another journey->Board the bus - replay]] (set: $switchedSeats to true)(set: $switchedseatEvent to true)You've been enjoying your window seat, but it really doesn't matter that much. Hopefully, you'll be sleeping for most of the journey. You nod in agreement and pack up your things. The dad is effusive in his thanks. The daughter...not so much.
But you're in luck. Your new seat is by the window too. Sometimes it pays to be nice.

[[Try to sleep]]You nearly jump out of your skin when you see he is looking at you. No, not at you. At the view sliding past the window. He can't help but notice you staring at him. He smiles. It's a nice smile.
It would be lovely to talk to him. It feels like days since you last had a proper conversation. But you don't want to disturb the snoring travellers around you. And then you have an idea. A slightly odd one, maybe, but it will have to do.
You pull out your phone and start typing an SMS. A message to the guy next to you. But you don't need to send it. You just show it to him.
[[He smiles again]]Oh thank god. It would have been so awkward if he'd freaked out or ignored you. Instead, he takes out his own phone and types a message. He holds it out to you. Aw, how charming.
Together you pass the next few hours getting to know each other in this strange, peaceful way. As you both watch the sun rising over the far reaches of Belgium, you put your hand on his. He doesn't seem to mind.
You must have dosed off at some point, because the bus has stopped and he's tapping you gently on your arm. The sunlight is so bright you can hardly bear to open your eyes.(set: $romancedNeighbour1 to true)
