You walk up to the man with the bags. You've been watching him for a while now. He went into the mall an hour ago and has just emerged with his hands full of unimaginable treats.
You wonder if the doe-eyes routine you have been practicing will work on him. Or maybe he will melt when he sees your eight year old face full of sadness beyond your years. Or maybe he'll just ignore you.

You look around cautiously, keeping an eye out for them.
"Sir?"
You manage in a squeaky voice.
He turns around to face you. His face shows the mildest signs of irritation and disgust.
"What do you want, kid?"
"Wou...would you spare some money for me? I haven't eaten in-"
"Sorry, kid. Ain't got cash for you. Take these instead."
He hands you a can of beans and a pack of chips. You can't believe your luck. He gives you a slight smile before walking away.
You turn around to leave. That's when the boy tackles you.

He jerks around violently, dropping the bags in his hands. Packs of chips, tins of canned beans and fish along with biscuits and drinks go tumbling down. It's a mess.
"Shit, kid! What are you -"
He gets onto his knees and starts gathering the food. This is the perfect chance, you realize, to snatch something and make a run for it. A meal at long last.

You never saw him coming. This was to be expected, of course. You don't just beg in her territory and expect to get away with it. You remember all the horror stories you've heard from others who were caught.
Begging in third-world countries could be a cut-throat business - literally.
"You little shit!"
Spittle flies onto your face as the boy shouts at you.
"What are you doing here?"
You lie on the ground, motionless, waiting for her to show up.

"Here, uh ... have this." He hands you a pack of chips and a can of beans.
"Thank you so much."
As he drives away, you spot a boy - he looks about your age - staring at you from behind a car.
She's near.

You walk into the room and head for your corner. It's been almost a month, and you're pretty comfortable with most of your co-workers. At least you are better with names and socializing, especially after the sessions with Dr. Hartman.
There's Trisha in the cubicle behind yours, and Parker beside you. Emily and Antonie are huddled near the front desk, whispering intensely. Antonie flashes his crazy trademark grin as he sees you. You manage a weak smile.

<<fadein 1s 3s>> [[Set up your desk]] <</fadein>>

<<fadein 3s 1s>>
You need to set up your desk before your first client arrives. You've loved the experience at an immigration firm - the fast-paced work life was initially tough to keep up with, but you've learnt a lot from it.
You turn your attention to your cubicle. It's just a desktop computer with some space on both sides; you've stacked your diaries with details of the clients you've interviewed on one side, while the other side is empty. You sit down onto your chair.

<<fadein 1s 3s>> [[Arrange Belongings]]
[[Check Drawer]]
[[Look around]] <</fadein>>

You set your worn backpack - a bright blue, one you have been using since the last decade - beside your chair, on the ground. You take out the bottle of water - the dented base makes it lean dangerously to one side - and place it beside the computer. You grab your current record book from the bag and add it to the top of the pile on the other side of the PC.
There. Set for the day.
You check your watch. Only a few seconds before the day begins; in fact, your first appointment should be coming in any minute now.

You decide to see what has captured their interest. They always have the wackiest topics to talk about. Their discussions have also been known to turn violent - the most recent and memorable incident being the (in)famous Mustard Fight of 2019 over a certain HawtDawgMan.
"Hey Emily. Antonie." You give them a slight nod as you approach them.
Antonie grins.

"Hey, Henry. How was the weekend?"
"It was fine, Antonie. How was yours?"
"Did you hear about North Park?" Emily jumps in.
You take a sharp breath.

You try to block the bad memories - the constant emptiness leading up to your teen years, and finally running away from the kind lady, only to be taken in by a foster home. It's been a while since you have recalled your time in North Park.
Until today.

You always saw Kellner as a benevolent being you were unworthy of, and abandoned out of a sheer feeling of guilt and a strong urge to not be dependent on a stranger's kindness.
And yet your throat tightens at the mention of her name...the same feeling as the day you ran away.
No. That was just a dream.

You know what to do. You’re well-trained by now. Your mind goes back to the first client you interviewed. You were so nervous back then; afraid they’d notice it was your first day at work. You can’t believe it was just 28 days ago.
Talk to the new clients. Get their details for processing.
You give the new client your best smile; he’s barely 21. Young, clean-shaven and obviously wowed by the ambience of the office – it’s pretty clear he has never been to a developed city. You feel sympathetic; after all, you’ve spent all your life away from the city, and been in his shoes many, many times before.

Ajay.
You roll your new name off of your tongue - trying to determine whether you like the sound of it. They had decided to call you that after realizing that you didn't have a birth name.
You turn in your new bed. Though comfortable, it is very different from the cold, hard ground you are used to.
The foster home people came for you a week ago - to be fair, it wasn't just you, it was all the kids on your street - except the ones older than 10. They would come back for them, they promised.

You force your eyes closed, and try to count down from 10. They had also begun to teach you. You had a 'test' tomorrow. Sometimes you dream of what it would be like to be back on the street.
You miss the freedom.
A knock on the door jolts you awake, just as you are drifting off to sleep. In the dark, you can barely make out the hour hand pointing to the 4.
You know enough to realize that it's late - possibly early morning.

<<fadein 1s 3s>> [[Open the Door]] <</fadein>>

You open the door. It's Mr. Syed, the kind man who was the first person to explain to you, that you were going to be moving into a new home.
"Ah, good, you're awake. There's a certain woman here to see you. She's flown all the way from the United States, kid. I ... I don't know how to put this to you but ... she has the paperwork too ..."
He pauses to draw in a big breath, then leans down and talks to you in a lowered voice.
"Kid ... your entire life is about to change. Use it wisely, okay?"

"You're moving again, kid. But to a much, much better place. Follow me, I'll introduce you to her."
You follow Mr. Syed in the dim light to the main office. With all the lights on, the office looks like the only sanctuary in the sea of darkness.
Through the windows, you can glimpse a woman ... except she's ... like the people in the movie they screened yesterday, for all the kids. She's a totally different colour than you.

"Here he is, Ms. Kellner." Syed announces as you enter the office. "This is quite unorthodox, to be honest. Usually you would come in for a few weeks, get acquainted with him ... but you have the paperwork. He's a very well behaved kid, I am sure you'll find him to be a delight."
For a few seconds she doesn't say anything. You can't take your eyes off of her face.

Without further thought, you pull out your phone and dial the number printed on the card. Your hands display none of the usual signs of inconfidence and hesitation as you grip the phone tightly and put it to your ear.
"Hello?"
"Hi, is this Mr. Koch? This is Henry Smyth calling."
"Ah yes, Mr. Smyth. I've been meaning to get in touch with you. I was hoping to have a talk with you. Ms. Marsh called, and you're in town right now. How fortunate! If you desire, we could talk right now; I am about to visit Ms. Kellner at the police station.

See Kellner ... now?
"Yes, sure." You hear yourself say.
What are you doing, you idiot? NO!
"Where do I meet you?"
Let's just go back to work, shall we? Forget this ever happened? Don't do this, you fool! Let sleeping dogs lie!
"The police station, in ... ," you hear the ruffling of paper. "Half an hour?"
"That's fine by me. Thank you, Mr. Koch. See you there."

You arrive at the station fifteen minutes early. Not knowing what to do, you simply take a seat in the waiting area and try to distract yourself with a magazine.
Five minutes later, you are relieved of your tension by a tall man dressed in a crisp black tailored suit over a white shirt. He towers over you as he asks: "Mr. Henry?"
"Yes, nice to meet you, Mr. Koch." You manage a weak smile.

<<fadein 1s 3s>> [[Follow Koch]] <</fadein>>

<<fadein 2s 1s>>
You follow him as he leads you further into the station. The men here seem to be familiar with him, you notice, as a couple of people nod their heads when Koch passes by.
Finally, you arrive at what seems to be an empty interrogation room. He gestures for you to enter first, and follows you into the room with a single table and two chairs on opposite sides.
"I'm glad we could meet, Henry. May I call you Henry?"
"Sure ... Mr. Koch." You respond with a smile.
"Gerald is fine." His charming smile takes away all the discomfort you had been feeling.

"That is entirely up to you, Henry. If you want, we could make a provision for you to have a quick meeting with her."
"Oh. I see."
"But," he says, putting his briefcase on the table and extracting a folder from it, "first things first. She wanted me to track you down and give you this."
He pulls out an envelope from the folder and slides it across the table.

"Well, you see, Henry," he says, putting his briefcase on the table and extracting a folder from it, "when she was first brought here, and I was appointed as her lawyer, I knew outright that the chances of her getting an acquittal were very slim. So, I asked her if she had any final wishes, so to speak."
"And?" You can't resist asking.
"And..." Gerald Koch continues. "All she wanted was to find you and give you this letter."
He pulls out an envelope from the folder and slides it across the table.

"You see, Henry," he begins, putting his briefcase on the table and extracting a folder from it, "the only regret she had after being arrested - and realizing she might not see the outside of a prison cell for the rest of her life - was not being in touch with you all your adult life. She wanted me to track you down, and deliver this."
He pulls out an envelope from the folder and slides it across the table.

He lets out a relieved sigh.
"My job here is done, that was all. I'll give you some time to read whatever's in there. Just let me know what you decide after you're done."
"Thank you, Mr. Koch."
"Gerald. You'll find me in the waiting area after you're done."

Mr. Koch appears surprised by the sudden shift in your behaviour.
"Uh..sure, why don't you take a seat? I'll talk to the shift officer to have her brought up to an available room right away. I'll come fetch you when everything's ready."
